Do you want “more” for yourself but are unsure about what “more” means? If your answer is yes and you’re a first or second year high school student, you’ve come to the right place.
HIGH BEAM helps shed light on possibilities and opportunities you might not have known existed. Our two-year program consists of four phases: create, learn, observe, and grow. Each phase may contain elements of the others and they may overlap at times, but they are all crucial to a successful HIGH BEAM experience.

InSite Program: How communities can take part
As an African proverb states: it takes a village to raise a child. InSite invites community members to take part in the success of its youth by opening its doors to site visits and conversation. It's designed to build upon the company site visits that happen during the travel portion of the program and gives students opportunities to see into different companies around the Bay Area, where they can see and learn about the great variety of careers that exist. Discovering where some of the students' interests lie can help them pinpoint skills they need to develop, courses of study, and mentorship. There are several ways that local companies can contribute to our students' futures. The descriptions are flexible depending on each company's situation.
Group Site Visits
In small groups of approximately 12 students plus chaperones, students will tour facilities and offices, learn about the company's history and purpose, hear about the various types of careers that are available within the company, and what the company looks for in any employee regarding culture fit, skills (soft and technical), and education level. Ideally, the tour wraps up with a Q&A session depending on staff availability, a brief talk from 1-2 employees about their specific jobs, what their career trajectory has been like, and what it took for them to get where they are.
Shadow Visits
As a student progresses through our educational and personal development tracks, they will be given opportunities to shadow professionals in the course of their work day in order to get a more in-depth understanding of what a profession entails. These could be half or whole day shadows with one professional or a day at one company shadowing a few individuals in different departments. If opportunities and scheduling permit, shadows have the flexibility to turn into internships.
Mentorship
Advice, attention, and encouragement from professionals and current college students is a crucial component in the HIGH BEAM model. We believe that mentorship could help propel a student forward and are looking for professionals and current college students who can speak with students on a mutually beneficial schedule. The nature of the conversations can start by being loosely planned with HIGH BEAM, but also grow independently with time. We anticipate conversations about education progress, college interests, life skills, and goals.
